PATERSON — Narcotics detectives arrested two city residents on drug charges early Tuesday after finding nearly 3,000 glassines of heroin and more than 200 pills of ecstasy at their home on Ellison Street, police said.
Matthew Malave, 20, was arrested about 6 a.m. after trying to escape through a rear window at 442 Ellison St., according to Lt. Alex Popov. Another resident, Arianny Jones, 19, also was arrested. The pair was charged with possession of heroin and ecstasy and possession with intent to distribute within 1,000 feet of Eastside High School. Bail was set for each of the accused at $300,000 with no 10-percent option.

PATERSON – The city is considering laying off 150 police officers in an attempt to close a $54 million budget gap. As of now the unprecedented deficit threatens to raise municipal taxes by nearly 50 percent.
Council President Aslon Goow Sr. said Friday tthat the reduction in police force – about 30 percent – was “the last resort.”
Steve Olimpio, of Paterson’s Policemen's Benevolent Association, called the idea senseless. “If you take that many guys off the street, it’s going to be mayhem out there,” he said.
The council met in closed session Friday night to discuss possible layoffs and furloughs. Mayor Jeffery Jones attended.
The $251 million budget introduced in September includes perhaps the largest deficit in city history, about $54 million once $22 million in state aid arrives. More budget hearings are expected.

NEWARK — Two northern New Jersey men accused of trying to join an al-Qaida-affiliated group overseas may be near a plea deal with the government.
On Monday, a federal judge gave lawyers for Mohamed Mahmood Alessa of North Bergen and Carlos Eduardo Almonte of Elmwood Park additional time to "attempt to finalize a plea agreement."
The two men are charged with conspiring to kill, maim and kidnap persons outside the United States by joining al-Shabab, a designated terrorist organization. They were arrested in June at New York's Kennedy Airport. Authorities believe they were headed for Egypt and then Somalia.
The U.S. Attorney's Office and a lawyer for Almonte did not comment on the status of plea negotiations. Alessa's lawyer didn't return a phone message.

September 21, 2010 International Leader Speaks on Local Violence
FACTS... Just one of the many challenges we face every day... So much of these tragic events revolve around drugs and gangs! We had a school program aimed at combating just that! Now, because your governing body wanted to lay off cops and not replenish the roll as others retired or left to join other agencies, our manpower is at the level last seen in 1972! All for a grand savings of approximately $135K ! If you calculate the savings using "home taxes" only, the "savings" was rounded up to $1.16 per household each month! That's what you save by the M&C's policy decision to DUMP four cops! Take a look. You decide!
We need your help!
